DESCRIPTION
Proteins are made up of amino acids, divided into groups according to their chemical structure. The proteinogenic amino acids L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine, characterized by a branched side chain, are known as "branched chain amino acids" or "BCAAs". Being essential amino acids, the body is not able to produce them autonomously, making it essential to take them through food.
Skeletal muscles are the main store of BCAAs, mainly as part of muscle proteins. In products of animal origin, BCAAs are present in a ratio of 2:1:1 (L-Leucine: L-Isoleucine: L-Valine). In the blood plasma, the concentration of BCAA is significantly higher compared to other amino acids (except L-Glutamine). Thanks to a transport system, BCAAs can cross the blood-brain barrier and reach the brain.
The absorption of BCAAs occurs through the intestinal mucosa, entering directly into the target tissues as free amino acids without undergoing any hepatic conversion. Studies indicate that BCAAs stimulate muscle protein synthesis and inhibit its breakdown, making them popular in weight training and bodybuilding.
In intensive training regimens, BCAAs can also reduce the sense of muscle fatigue, suggesting a connection with serotonin, which is responsible for exhaustion during physical exertion. The theory holds that BCAAs, competing with L-Tryptophan for the same transport mechanism in the brain, can reduce the formation of serotonin, contributing to a lower feeling of exhaustion.
In addition, BCAAs seem to play a role in muscle protection, preventing muscle pain and muscle damage, as demonstrated in a study on untrained young men undergoing resistance exercises.
